YouTube Video Experience

I must confess I was a little nervous and self conscious about appearing in my first YouTube video.  The experience made me realise that it was quite easy and I was surprised how relaxed I was. Both Daniela and I found it very amusing seeing ourselves on the finished video.

Uploading the video onto YouTube was easier than I expected and the end result was very rewarding.

Thanks Daniela for being my partner in this experience, we had lots of laughs and made some mistakes but we learned something new, to share and use for the future.

Here is my YouTube video on How to use a photocopier.

Video - World's Most Beautiful Libraries

This video shows inspirational photos of libraries around the world, showing the biggest and most beautiful libraries. I feel that it is interesting for the world to know what wonderful environments that exist around the world in which to house books.

TeacherTube and YouTube Experience

When looking at choosing a preferred video, I found it easier to manoeuvre around YouTube than TeacherTube. YouTube has many different videos to choose from. More people are familiar with YouTube and will most likely upload videos there.  I'd have to admit that YouTube is one of my most used resources and I think that it  has a much broader variation of videos and subjects than TeacherTube does.

I had never heard of TeacherTube until this project however, after researching TeacherTube I found that it has a more specified group of videos which are geared towards lesson plans and instructional videos.  TeacherTube is helpful for teachers and education, It is a safe alternative to the benefits of YouTube Videos, which are great for enhancing lessons and deepening students' understanding of concepts, skills, or historical events. In contrast, TeacherTube is full of trusted material posted by other professionals.

I chose the
Worlds Most Beautiful Libraries video because I found it so amazing and wanted to share with others in viewing some of the most beautiful architectural libraries there are around the globe. I thoroughly enjoyed viewing this video, it actually brought tears to my eyes in seeing such beautiful libraries in such wonderful architectural buildings. It is nice to see books preserved for all to enjoy, research, explore and investigate.

Podcasts

Searching through the ABC site http://www.abc.net.au/radio/, I found this a very interesting story on Townsville City mobile  library. A video on the driving mobile library weekly trip to Magnetic Island.  It also gives a commentary from the staff and the clients that use the service.    By clicking the following link, you can read the full story yourself. I think it's well worth the visit http://www.abc.net.au/local/audio/2012/02/08/3426082.htm

Also I enjoyed listening  to this story of the book '
Shy the Platypus' by children's author Leslie Rees which was first published in 1940.  National Library of Australia has now republished this heritage edition of the book going back to the original text and including some new illustrations, as well as some beautiful drawings from its own collection. This series appeals to children from the age of 8 up, stories bringing back animals to life and the life cycle of animals. We listen to Leslie Rees's daughter who provided manuscripts and insights into what inspired her father, who died in 2000 at the age of 92. By clicking the following link you can read and view the full story National Library

Wiki Experience

I have just experienced using a Wiki page for the first time. The pages have been created using the web site "PBWORKS" which can be accessed by clicking on the following link http://pbworks.com/

I have practised editing a page, and created a new page with a brief review of a recently read book.
Like most sites, this site was a bit confusing to begin with. Once I got used to it, it was reasonably simple to carry out the basic functions such as editing an existing page and creating a new page. Navigating through the pages was reasonably easy with links available on screen. It also allows you to very simply link any pages together making it even easier for readers to navigate between pages.

In summary, this site appears reasonably simple to use.

Wikis

A wiki is a type of website that allows users to easily add, remove, or otherwise edit and change most available content. This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for collaborative writing. Wiki is a free website that is easy to create, easy to edit and easy to share with others.

Librarians can create a research guide, add content and publish the guide from any computer with an internet connection. Changes can be made from the reference desk, office, from home, or on the road. These changes are immediate and available instantly for users. The most immediate benefit, for both patrons and librarians, is the ease and quickness with which the website can be updated.

Wiki page can be used as a staff home page to store all manner of information. It would be ideal for coordinating social or similar events within the workplace or more broadly amongst other libraries.

It would be very useful to recommend creating a wiki for committee or task-force groups, the page could be used to post minutes or create agendas. Using a wiki page in this way would allow all participants to contribute information and ideas.

I believe that wiki’s are indeed useful in a team environment. With the appropriate monitoring and use they can become a very valuable resource.

Flickr knowledge

Flickr allows you to store and share photos with family and friends , or to the world.  I like it that you can give your photos a "tag", which is like a keyword or category label. Tags help you find photos which have something in common. You can assign up to 75 tags to each photo .
I like this link which is a guide to help you get the most out of Flickr.  The following link is provided for direct access to the Flickr tools

With Flickr you can see photos from around the world. The world Map lets you see exactly where those pictures were taken. It's like a holiday from your computer chair. You can also tag your own photos and place them on a map.I think the video tutorial on this web site was easy to follow. The following link is provided for direct access to Google earth

View on Delicious

Delicious is the name of a web site that is a social bookmarking web service. The site provides users with the ability to tag, save, manage and share web pages. Registration and use of the Delicious web site is a free service.
Delicious is a useful tool in the library environment; Web sites can be saved, tagged and useful sites easily found at a later date. Delicious can be used to search sites based on a customers requests by using keywords (tags).  In particular, I can see a benefit in the use of Delicious in the adult education component of the Linc (library) where students can use this site to build and share research and items of interest.

Holiday 2011

This photo represents a snapshot of our travels in 2011.

The main purpose of the trip was to visit family in Wales. We also visited North Yorkshire, caught up with some old friends, and visited the village of "Goathland" the village used in the filming of the popular British TV series Heartbeat.

Our travels took us from Wales and England through many interesting countries in Europe and a stop-over in Dubai on the way home. Over a period of nearly 6 weeks we saw a total of 9 countries. We experienced the history of central eastern Europe particularly the horrors of world war 2 and its impact on Poland; and saw the modern, rapidly developing, Dubai.

The  building   photo is a picture of a typical Bavarian building located in the old town square in Frankfurt. I found this style particularly beautiful and quaint. I hope you like it too!

View on RSS Feeds

I like RSS  and newsreader because it allows me to have contents from multiple Web sources in one place.  I no longer have to visit different Web sites to obtain the lates information on my topics of interest.  I can decide which articles I wish to read by simply clicking a link.

I could use this technology in my personal life by subscribing to all my favourite stories on Google reader. Google reader allows me to organize my stories in separate folders with headings describing my favourite topics e.g. library, gardening, travel and cooking etc. All these folders can have multiple RSS feeds, and for simplicity, can be read easily through my personalized IGoogle screen.

Libraries can take advantage of this technology in a number of ways. It can be used to keep updated with the latest news e.g. library news, world news, and information technology news and so on.  This technology can also be used to minimize searching for up-to-date information potentially increasing the efficiency of the library. Other applications/benefits include the use as  effective too to network with other libraries e.g. to share what you see, read and learn. Services can be broadly promoted to clients.

The Joy of Books

Ohlenkamp, S. 2012, The joy of books, viewed 29 February 2012,
<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKVcQnyEIT8>
The video created by Sean Ohlenkamp, displays a perfect book heaven, set in a Toronto book store. This creative piece highlights the vibrancy and life of the printed word and generates a sense of nostalgia for the bookshop experience. Sean Ohlenkamp shares the booklovers dream of displaying books efficiently and creatively into well organised bookshelves via some clever animation. The books are brought to life using perfect motion, making the moving colours a highly attractive visual experience. The book store’s aesthetically pleasing environment together with the animation emphasises the value in the proper placement of books. The video’s animation is perfectly complimented by using music by Grayson Matthews which generates excitement in the viewer.

Miniature Library House

Galperina, M. 2012, Let’s build a miniature library “house” in Brooklyn, viewed 27 February 2012,
<http://animalnewyork.com/2012/02/lets-build-a-miniature-library-house-in-brooklyn/>

In her blog, Marina Galperina draws attention to new initiative and functional artwork titled 'the hundred story house'.   The project undertaken by Brooklyn artist Leon Reid IV and film producer Julia Marchesi, speaks to the changing nature of 'book lending' in today's modern world.  The interactive artwork featured in the piece, highlights the parallel between community and library as the principal draw of this project.  The aesthetic appeal of the 'house' coupled with the take-a-book, leave-a-book lending functions, uses art and the published word to start a conversation and promote learning in its surrounds.  Ms Galperina effectively utilises this interactive artwork as an example of the benefits published works can bring to a community and suggests that the increasingly popular digital alternative is detrimental to social inclusion agenda.
